Why Braille Maths Matters: A Guide to Making Maths Inclusive
Maths is everywhere, in our daily lives, education, and work. But for people who are blind or visually impaired, accessing maths can be so much more complicated than reading words on a page. Maths is a highly visual subject, filled with symbols, shapes, fractions, and equations that depend on spacing and layout to make sense.
That’s where Braille Maths comes in! It opens the door for blind and partially sighted learners to study, understand, and enjoy maths at every level. At A2i, we believe that no one should be excluded from learning just because of the way information is presented, and we’re proud to help make maths accessible for everyone.

What Is Braille Maths?
Braille Maths uses Unified English Braille (UEB) to represent numbers, symbols, and mathematical expressions in a tactile form that can be read by touch. It’s a structured and logical code that allows people to explore everything from simple addition and fractions to advanced concepts like algebra, geometry, and calculus.
Alongside Braille text, many mathematical concepts rely on tactile diagrams which are raised images that make graphs, charts, and shapes accessible. Together, these formats enable students and professionals to follow the same lessons, exams, and coursework as their sighted peers.
Braille Maths isn’t just about translation, it’s about making sure that information is clear, accurate, and easy to navigate for the reader. That’s something A2i takes great care in achieving.
How A2i Makes Maths Accessible
At A2i, we’ve been transcribing Braille for 25 years, and we have a dedicated team of highly skilled transcribers who specialise in Maths and Science Braille. Our Maths experts have degree-level qualifications and years of experience in transcribing complex equations, scientific notation, and technical content – right up to university level.
We transcribe Maths materials for all ages and abilities, from early school learners through to postgraduate students. Every piece of work is adapted to suit the reader’s needs and level of study:
- For primary students, we use extra spacing and clear layouts to help them learn new Braille symbols and understand step-by-step methods.
- For secondary and college-level work, we ensure more complex algebraic and statistical expressions are formatted clearly, following the correct UEB Maths and Science codes.
- For degree-level study, our team handles advanced topics like calculus, mechanics, matrices, and data analysis, while maintaining accuracy and consistency throughout.
We also produce tactile diagrams for geometry, graphs, and scientific illustrations, using varied textures, raised lines, and clear labelling to make each diagram easy to interpret by touch. All our Braille and tactile materials meet UKAAF standards, and everything we produce is carefully proofread, checked, and tested for clarity and usability.
Our work supports students and organisations across the UK, including the Liverpool Hope University, Education Authority Northern Ireland, The Open University, and the UK Maths Trust.
Each project is handled with care, communication, and flexibility to meet specific learning needs and deadlines.
What Our Clients Say
“We appreciated the personalised service – staff took a lot of time to listen and discuss how best to represent information to our student. They discussed various options and always wanted to create the most accessible format to ensure the student had increased independence and accessibility. They were very approachable and professional.”
Alison Gilmore, NI Education Authority
“We are delighted with the work carried out by A2i on behalf of our student. It’s highly specialised work, requiring knowledge of both alternative formats and mathematics to a high level. We worked with A2i to provide a timetable for materials to be produced across the year, and they tailored the documents to meet the individual needs of our student. The service they provide is fantastic.”
Judith Fiddy, Liverpool Hope University
Why Braille Maths Matters
Access to maths is about more than learning equations, it’s about equality. When students can read, write, and solve problems independently, they gain confidence, curiosity, and freedom to pursue any subject or career they choose.
Braille Maths gives people that independence. Whether it’s a young learner building their skills, a university student studying physics, or a professional tackling data and finance, accessible maths materials make sure that everyone has the same opportunity to learn and succeed.
How We Can Help
A2i makes maths accessible for schools, universities, exam boards, and individuals. Whether you need a single workbook, a full course transcription, or tactile diagrams, our friendly team can help you find the right solution.
